The first day is usually set aside for travel, but we are so excited we couldn’t wait to get started! We have a surprise activity set aside for you in Fort Smith, Ark. (Hint: you will get the chance to stretch your legs). After this, we soak up the gorgeous fall colors as we enter the Ouachita National Forest on the Talimena Skyline Drive. This scenic byway, built exclusively for the view, offers breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding countryside. Along the way, we stop to take in the view at several scenic picture stop before arriving at our overnight destination: Queen Wilhelmina Lodge in Mena, Ark.

We continue our adventure in Hot Springs, Ark. with some free time to explore downtown. This thriving metropolis managed to hold on to its roots with unique boutiques, local eateries, and—of course—bathhouses. Once you’ve grabbed a bite to eat and some great souvenirs, it’s time to visit the Gangster Museum. That’s right! I said, Gangsters! From the 1920s to-'60s, Hot Springs, Ark. attracted people from all walks of life, including infamous gangsters like Al Capone. At the museum, you’ll learn all about how some of the most notorious criminals left the hustle and bustle of NYC to enjoy some downtime in the Midwest. Leaving the intriguing history of Hot Springs behind, we arrive at the Mt. Magazine Lodge where we will be staying for two nights.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Our morning begins with a one-of-a-kind stop at the Subiaco Abbey. The stained-glass windows, detailed sculptures and carefully cultivated landscape, while beautiful, are not the things that make this monastery unique. This group of humble, Benedictine monks is famous for using the land to create intricate woodcrafts, nationally recognized hot sauces and even handcrafted beer. Their labor reinforces their religious dedication to hard work and hospitality. After visiting the monks, we head over to Post Winery for a tour and included lunch. Made from grapes grown in Post Winery’s vineyards, this winery has been operational since the 1870s. We finish enjoying the scenic beauty of the abbey and vineyard and return to the Mt. Magazine Lodge for an included dinner and live music.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Leaving the Mt. Magazine Lodge, we start our journey back toward home, arriving in Little Rock for a tour of the Arkansas Capitol Building. With an architecture similar to the US Capitol Building, the Arkansas Capitol Building also has a large, central dome structure above two wings. Inside, there are many exhibits dedicated to Arkansas heroes who participated in major US conflicts as well as information about how the state has changed over time. From the Capitol Building, we venture to downtown Little Rock for free time on your own. We freshen up at our hotel in Little Rock and end the day with dinner and a show at Murray’s Dinner Playhouse. This local theater has been providing quality entertainment and delicious food for almost 50 years! Each menu is unique to the play that is being performed. After a full day of fun and history, we return to the hotel to get some sleep.
We make our way home today after this fun Ozarks adventure and hope to see you again as we continue to Make Memories!
