“Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.” This quote is from the movie Shawshank Redemption and Air Force One which shared this very space for portions of the movies. The historic Ohio State Reformatory built in 1896 housed over 150,000 men before it ceased operation as a prison in 1990. The structure itself is an architectural marvel worthy of appreciation on this aspect alone. Your prison experience is unique in that you enter and leave the depths of the institution in the same day of your visit. That night you will be happily tucked into your nice, warm bed in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Day 3:

Lodging: Holiday Inn by the Falls

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

A very light travel day delivers us over the border and straight to our first don’t miss spot. The next 24-hours are between you and Niagara Falls with her true powerful essence which never changes. Making Memories gives you exploration time where you can sit and marvel or you can go explore the tunnels leading you behind the falls where you have an intimate encounter with the wall of falling water. Dinner tonight is indeed a special treat at the exquisite Niagara Falls Skylon Tower, a revolving dining room where the menu is rivaled only by the spectacular view. Our unique lodging tonight is near the fall so you can enjoy the Canadian sky morning, noon and night!

Day 4:

Day 8:

Today, we’ll be like Boy Scouts and always be prepared; so wear your hiking boots so you can get inside the Flume Gorge in Cannon Mountain.  This naturally formed chasm has covered bridges, natural waterfalls and incredible mountain views.  We’ll also stop at the Loon Mountain Tramway where we travel on the longest scenic gondola in New Hampshire.  The White Mountains are sure to leave a forever lasting impression of awe-struck inspiration as you see them covered in garments of color from fall foliage.  Our afternoon continues the beautiful exploration as we board the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing train.  We will arrive at the highest peak in New England where you can send a postmarked stamp to someone at home.  Tonight, you’ll rest in luxury and relaxation in the White Mountain Hotel where we will dine on our delicious dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow morning; both off their customized menu.  The stunning setting of the privately owned 254-acre estate on the mountainside will be a breath of fresh air!

Day 9:

Lodging: Hilton Garden Inn

Meals: Breakfast

This morning in the coach, the view will not disappoint us as we encounter several covered bridges with the backdrop of nature’s beauty. We’ll drive by the Bush Compound as we continue our trek to our next destination – visiting with 1 other million annual sightseers at the Mayflower II. This is a replica of the 1620 voyage ship which safely transported many pilgrims to the New World. We will also stop at Plymouth Rock before we travel to the breath-catching National Monument to Forefathers. This grand monument commemorates the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Day 10:

Lodging: Holiday Inn Express

Meals: Breakfast

Ranked as one of the “Ten Best Historic Homes” in the world by National Geographic’s The Ten Best of Everything publication, we introduce you the personality-filled Mark Twain House and Museum, largely designed and sketched by Livy Clemens, Mrs. Mark Twain, herself. Mark Twain said of his abode, “To us, our house…had a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with and approvals and solicitudes and deep sympathies; it was of us, and we were in its confidence and lived in its grace and in the peace of its benediction.” Yes, this is another must stop place. Our afternoon does an about face in tone as we move to the West Point Military Academy. On the Hudson River, West Point has numerous monuments and we invite our step-on tour guide to help us explore these grounds established in 1802. Our nightly resting area is Haskell, New Jersey.

Day 11:

A peaceful ride takes us through Amish farmland to our lodging for the evening provided by Bird-in-Hand Family Inn where we enjoy “Pennsylvania Dutch clean–and that’s clean!” Save room for a mighty meal at dinner because Making Memories has your evening meal waiting for you at Plain & Fancy Restaurant. This Amish farm-feast, pass-the-platter dinner stop has been featured on Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food Nation. We’ll let you decide who wins that battle!
