Texas…when most people think of Texas they tend to think of cowboys on horseback driving herds of cattle across wide-open plains under an endless sky.  Well, that is not just a romanticized dream and we are going to be experiencing much of this landscape on our journey deep into the heart of Texas.  This trip has everything necessary to immerse you in the Texas spirit:  the legendary Palo Duro Canyon, a cattle drive, a dude ranch, a ghost town, even an outdoor theater AND we’ll slip over into New Mexico to visit Carlsbad Caverns.  The caverns contain formations of startling shapes and colors, of such monumental proportions, that country humorist Will Rogers called this underground wonderland “the Grand Canyon with a roof on it.”  We include highlights of the Dallas/Fort Worth area before ending this fantastic tour.  Beautiful memories “as big as Texas” will remain with you for years to come!

Day One:

The first day of our excursion into the land of the cowboys is a travel day (be sure to bring your boots and cowboy hat).  We will make our way all the way across Oklahoma and overnight in Amarillo, TX for the next 2 nights.

Day Two:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Our day kicks off with a step-on-guide taking us around Amarillo on a 3-hour city tour showing us all the sights this Texan city has to offer.  We’ll have free time in Amarillo to explore some of the local antique and craft shops after lunch, then, Making Memories Tours will treat you to some Cowboy Gelato (Italian Ice Cream).  Guess what folks…the day’s not over yet.  We still have lots to see at our next stop:  Palo Duro Canyon.   Palo Duro Canyon is the most spectacular and scenic landscape feature in the Panhandle of Texas.  The canyon exposes geological formations more than 250 million years old.  A guide will board our coach for a narrated drive through the park.  Parts of the scenic drive descend 1,000 feet below the rim to the canyon floor.  We return to the Pioneer Amphitheatre for an included barbecue meal before taking our reserved seats to view the musical drama Texas.  What a day!  After the play, we return to our hotel for a much-needed rest.

Day Three:

Meals: Breakfast

As we depart our hotel and Texas this morning, we cross over into New Mexico.  Our destination in New Mexico is going to be a real treat for everyone.  Today we are going to see Carlsbad Caverns National Park, often referred to as 8th Wonder of the World.  The Chihuahuan Desert region, studded with spiky plants and lizards, offers little hint that what Will Rogers called, "the Grand Canyon with a roof on it" waits underground.  Yet, at this desert's northern reaches underneath the Guadalupe Mountains, lies one of the deepest, largest, and most ornate caverns ever found.  You’ll have several hours to explore this wonderland on your own before we head out and make our way to our hotel here in Carlsbad, NM.

Day Four:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

This morning we all hop on our big, red pony and make our way back into Texas.  Our first stop for the day takes us to the West of the Pecos Museum, three full floors with over 50 rooms of exhibits, display artifacts, history and west Texas lore.  Continuing on we’ll arrive at Chisos Mountains Lodge in Big Bend National Park where we will be staying tonight.  We have an included dinner here at the lodge.  Rest up tonight because we’ve got a big day exploring Big Bend tomorrow.

Day Five:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Meeting us at our hotel this morning is our step-on-guide for the day who will lead us as we explore all the beauty and history Big Bend has to offer, which happens to be a lot!  It’s a good thing we have a guide with us because you know how everything is supposed to be bigger in Texas…well, here is proof:  Big Bend National Park is larger than the state of Rhode Island.  That’s right this Texas park is bigger than an entire New England state.  It also has the Chisos Mountain Range within its borders.  After spending the day seeing some of the natural beauty this park has to offer, we’ll ride off on our way to our next overnight in Fort Stockton.

Day Six:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

We leave our hotel this morning and head on over to “The Coming King” Sculpture Prayer Gardens.  These beautiful gardens, filled with biblical sculptures including a 77-foot lighted cross, draw thousands of people every year.  Afterwards, we will make our way to our hotel here in San Antonio where we will be for two nights.  But the fun’s not over yet, we still have one more item on our agenda for today.  We will be taking everyone to the Flying L Dude Ranch for dinner and some Texas entertainment tonight.

Day Seven:

Meals: Breakfast

Our adventure in Texas continues today with a full day of sightseeing around old San Antonio.   Today you are free to explore because there is a “hop on, hop off” tour through the city.  You can hop on a double-decker bus and hop off at any attraction you want to see.  Stay as long or as short as you like and when you’re ready to go, you simply wait for another bus. Repeat until you’ve taken in as much as you like.  This gives you the freedom to explore this beautiful city and shop to your heart’s content.  We will be staying at the same hotel tonight so just come on back whenever you so choose.

Day Eight:

Meals: Breakfast

We start heading north today but that doesn’t mean our time in Texas is done (Texas is rather big after all).  On our way northward we will be making a stop at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, where we have the chance to learn a little history about the Texas Rangers and about some of the heroes of the great organization.  Afterwards we head on over to the Fort Worth Stockyard, where we will be witnessing a cattle drive down exchange street.  After the cattle drive every has some free time to shop at all the western stores, explore some saloons, or make your way to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.  We’ll leave out from here and settle into our hotel in Arlington.  But the day’s not over yet we have one more exciting treat for you, one that is guaranteed to make some memories, the stockyard championship rodeo. You can’t get much more Texan than that.

Day Nine:

Meals: Breakfast

There is a saying about how time flies when you’re having fun and in this case, it’s all too true.  Can it already be time to say goodbye to the Lone Star State?  We are sure you have made some lifelong memories and probably have a camera full of pictures.  So we say “Happy trails to you until we meet again.”
