When most people think of an island getaway, the Caribbean is most often what comes to mind; however, when we take off on this island getaway, we won’t even have to leave the U.S.  There are a multitude of gorgeous islands on America’s Great Lakes!  This exciting trip will allow you to experience the serenity of the northern hardwood forest, and of course, no trip to this land would be complete without a stop at Mackinac Island.   Beautiful beaches and old-world hospitality awaits on this island-hopping excursion.

Day One:

Leave your cares and troubles behind as you climb aboard our coach.  Use today to meet your travel companions.  You’ll soon be making memories together!  This evening, we’ll be staying in Des Moines, IA.

Day Two:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

The excitement builds as we continue north, drawing ever closer to Lake Superior.  This afternoon, we arrive at our Hotel in Superior, WI.  However, the day is yet young, and we just got here sooo…..  How about an evening Scenic Dinner Cruise on the harbor with some of the best sightseeing on Lake Superior? This is something you won’t soon forget.

Day Three:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Today the first island on this trip is waiting for us:  Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands. Forget clocks! You’re on island time! Stroll the sandy beaches and relax to the rhythm of waves rolling in. Watch and feel the breezes blowing through the towering pines.  Savor beautifully prepared local fare, served up with a side of lakeshore views. Shop the galleries and cultivate your artistic spirit.  It’s all here for you on beautiful Madeline Island!  After our time on this lovely island comes to an end, we board our ferry and make our way to our hotel for the night in Ashland, WI.

Day Four:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Be sure you remember to bring your camera today because we are driving to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where we have an amazing experience set up for everyone. One you won’t soon forget!  A cruise along Pictured Rocks Lakeshore takes us into and alongside the most visually stunning 40 miles of shoreline on the Great Lakes!  East Channel Lighthouse, Grand Island, Miner’s Castle, Painted Coves, Lover’s Leap and many more ,each with its own history and unique beauty. These are just some of the remarkable landmarks you can bask in on this incredible voyage. After our cruise, our hotel in Munising, MI is waiting for us.

Day Five:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Something quite unique is waiting for us all this morning, and I bet nobody could guess what it is.  We’re heading to Oswald’s Bear Ranch.  This complex is the largest (bear only) Bear Ranch in the U.S.  Oswald’s Bear Ranch cares for twenty-nine live, roaming bears who dwell in 2 huge habitats and 2 smaller environments.  Now, that’s something to remember!  If bears aren’t exciting enough for you, don’t worry! We have more planned for today, like a trip over to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Tahquamenon Park’s Upper Falls is one the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across.  This is a view you won’t want to miss!  After our time at the falls, we head over to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, where you can learn about some of the history of the Great Lakes and the ships that sailed them never to return.  After our time at the museum, our hotel will be waiting for us in St. Ignace, MI.

Day Six:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

An amazing, serene, and—of course—memorable day lies ahead of us today as we arrive at perhaps the most magical town in the Great Lakes. I am, of course, referring to Mackinac Island.  Some people may not know anything about this remarkable island, but I promise, nobody ever leaves this place disappointed.  This is a land where the horse and carriage was never replaced by the automobile; family owned lodging properties were never replaced by corporate hotels; and fudge stores never replaced their 19th century recipes with instant mixes.  This is also a land that holds a Revolutionary era fort where the British couldn’t permanently replace the Americans.  Mackinac Island is a place to ditch you routine and discover the rhythm of waves and horse-clops.  A place where getting there is half the fun.  We arrive at The Grand Hotel in horse drawn carriages this afternoon to have lunch.  After lunch, we enjoy a tour of the island, also via carriage ride.  Our overnight will be here on the Island.

Day Seven:

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Guess what we have planned for everybody this morning.  NOTHING!!!   So, take this opportunity to sit back and relax in this old-fashioned town, or you can spend this morning exploring, shopping, eating, take a bike ride, or anything you feel like.  You are your own boss.  If there is a better place to have a little free time, I can’t think of it.  We leave Mackinac Island this afternoon, and our next stop brings us to Thunder Bay Resort for our stay tonight.  We’ve got some unique entertainment set up for everyone this evening. We depart on a horse drawn wagons for some elk viewing and an elegant dinner in the woods.  Something as original as this is sure to make loads of memories.

Day Eight:

Meals: Breakfast

Better bring your sunscreen today because we’re going to be spending a little time out on the water this afternoon. Our travels today bring us to Traverse city, where we have an exciting adventure in store for everybody at the Traverse Tall Ship Company.  For the rest of this afternoon, you will be sailing on a real sailboat on Lake Michigan.  What a way to make memories!  Disembarking from our boat, we be overnighting in Manistee, MI.

Day Nine:

Meals: Breakfast

We have had an amazing time on this adventure together, so as we start home, take today to reminisce on all the fun, excitement, and the memories we made.  Travelling homeward, we arrive in Champaign IL where we will be staying the night.

Day Ten:

Meals: Breakfast

You’ll be making you way home today We here at Making Memories want to say, Thank You for coming with us on this island-hopping adventure, and we hope you’ll join us again sometime.
